Distance from Armonk, NY to NYC: 35 Miles Armonk, NY is a picturesque community of about 12,000 residents. Armonk, NY has long been known as the corporate headquarters for IBM. One of three distinct geographic areas within the town of North Castle, Armonk’s bustling town center is surrounded by a variety of distinct neighborhoods. Armonk, NY's unique location allows easy access to Westchester and Connecticut’s excellent dining and shopping opportunities.
History The name "Armonk" is believed to be derived from the Mohican word, Cohamoog, meaning wide flat place where the water runs. A refuge for people fleeing religious persecution, Armonk, NY was settled by the Quakers in 1730. North Castle played a significant role in the American Revolution. The Town of North Castle was incorporated in 1788 and was once part of the parish of Rye. In the early 19th century, most North Castle residents were farmers. By mid-century, the railroad brought about a shift from agriculture, and Armonk, NY which had been by-passed by the railroad, suffered economically. In the latter half of the century, the area’s population declined by nearly one-half.
In the early 20th century, with the purchase of reservoir land and the construction of the Kensico Dam in Valhalla, North Castle’s economy improved dramatically. The use of North Castle granite and the decision by immigrant stone masons who built the dam to settle in the community were major factors in the resurgence.
Today, the area’s residents actively participate in town affairs to ensure an orderly rate of growth while preserving the quality of the environment.
